Feed the Hungry, Adoration, Mozart: Latin Mass Community Thrives in CLE

The Good, the True and The Beautiful.  The Cleveland Latin Mass Community has another very busy week in store for Catholics in Northeastern Ohio.



  

The Good


On Monday, January 30, our favorite gang of young adult evangelizers, The Oliver Plunkett Social Club, is back in action at historic St Ignatius Antioch Church.  All area young adults are invited to join with the Plunketeers for a 5:30 pm Traditional Latin Mass followed by meal prep for the hungry in collaboration with the St Vincent de Paul Society.  If you have never been to a Plunkett event, this is the perfect time to start!

The Plunkett club embraces the notion that Catholic Tradition is more than just Latin, incense and bells; it is feeding a neighbor, clothing a stranger, and rescuing the unborn.  (i.e. living the Church’s 2,000 year old tradition of corporal & spiritual acts of mercy).  And so, not surprisingly, when more and more young adults started returning to the beautiful, historic Catholic churches in urban Cleveland and attending the timeless Latin Mass of the Ages, these same young adults found neighborhoods in need of their love, kindness and Christian Charity.

The first corporal work of mercy is to “feed the hungry.” St Ignatius of Antioch Parish provides food assistance regularly through its Saint Vincent de Paul Society to neighbors in need.. The young adults from the Plunkett club will be teaming with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society for this effort and preparing a variety of casserole dishes to be dispersed by volunteers to those in need in our community.

Born in 1581 to peasant farmers, St Vincent de Paul was a humble priest whose organizational genius, love of the poor, and dedication to the Church revolutionized charity practices in ways that are still practiced today. That's traditional Catholicism in action, friends!

The Beautiful


On Tuesday, January 31…a truly unique opportunity! A Solemn Requiem Mass for much beloved Pope Benedict XVI will be offered at St Rocco’s Church at 7pm.




The musical setting for the Mass will be Mozart’s Requiem with assistance from Cleveland Orchestra musicians. This will be a true feast for the ears and for our hearts!  

In this time of so much chaos and crisis, let us join together and pray for this great man who fought to preserve our Faith and traditions. Bring some friends.

The True


The Latin Mass Community is helping lead the way in embracing Bishop Edward Malesic’s strong call to share the truth about the Real Presence in the Eucharist.


For more than a year now, Father Doug Brown at  Mary Queen of Peace has been having First Friday All-Night Eucharistic Adoration for the Preservation of the Traditional Latin Mass & Greater Reverence for the Holy Eucharist.  The vigils have been a huge success with many people present in the middle of the night praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament. 




It is little wonder that the Latin Mass Community has so strongly endorsed the bishop’s recent commitment “to teach clearly and authentically what the Church teaches, including how the sacrament of the Eucharist is administered, prayed, understood, reverenced and how the faithful are transformed by this sacrament.”  The Traditional Latin Mass is itself a mini-catechism on the Real Presence.  The beauty of our historic urban churches, the reverence of the timeless liturgy, the mystical silence, kneeling at the altar rail for Holy Communion on the tongue, Gregorian chant.  Father Faber, priest of the Brompton Oratory in the last century, rightly described the Old Mass as the “most beautiful thing this side of Heaven.”

It should come as no surprise that the patron saint of the poor and the homeless, St Benedict Joseph Labre, is also known as the Saint of Perpetual Adoration. Born in 1748, the great beggar saint loved Our Lady, the Blessed Sacrament, and his fellow poor in a heroic manner - Catholic tradition in action! Please find an hour to give to our Lord this First Friday and Saturday!
