Padre Pio Academy Stuns Speech & Debate Establishment with Strong Performance

The classically educated Catholic students at a small, private academy in Lakewood’s Bird Town neighborhood continue to astound the Speech & Debate establishment.  This past weekend, the Padre Pio Academy Debate Team continued its phenomenal season with a very strong performance at the Detroit Urban Debate League Tournament.  The performance was even more remarkable given the fact that none of the debaters on the Padre Pio team has yet reached high school.

The team of Gideon Fry and Balin Kimbrell won the JV High School Policy Debate division.   They were 3-1 in preliminary rounds and then defeated Cass Technical High School in the championship round on a 3-0 decision.   Cass Technical High School was undefeated going into the championship round having defeated Padre Pio earlier in the tournament.  This is the first high school championship Gideon and Balin have won.   It is the first time winning a championship round (not all tournaments have a championship round.)

The team of Andrew Fry and Katie Kastelic went 2-2 in the Novice High School Policy Debate division.   This was a great weekend for Padre Pio Academy in that it was the first time they won this year, the first time they beat high school teams, and they missed breaking to semi-finals by just one loss.  Also, this is the youngest team to ever debate at any level in Ohio or Michigan.  Quite impressive.

In addition, Padre Pio Academy won the following speaker awards.

·         Gideon Fry – 3rd place speaker, JV High School Policy Debate
·         Balin Kimbrell – 4th place speaker, JV High School Policy Debate
·         Andrew Fry – 4th place speaker Novice High School Policy Debate
·         Katie Kastelic – 5th place speaker, Novice High School Policy Debate

In addition, the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association (http://www.themifa.org/debate.html) has extended an invitation to the Padre Pio teams to compete on January 10-11 in the MIFA JV and Novice State Championships.   This the first time in the state’s history that a team from outside the state of Michigan has been invited to compete in this tournament and creates a unique situation in which a non-Michigan team could win the tournament.   It is a great honor and a testament to how hard The Parde Pio kids are working.  Additionally, it is a tribute to the patience and leadership of Ian Kimbrell, the legendary Padre Pio Academy Speech and Debate Coach.
