Padre Pio Academy Earns Prestigious Newman Guide Recognition

Padre Pio Academy was recently honored as one of just 44 schools nationwide recognized for faithfully forming students in truth, beauty, and Catholic identity. For more than twenty years, PPA has been a hidden gem in Lakewood for many local families seeking an authentically Catholic education.

This national recognition from the prestigious Cardinal Newman Society shines a well-deserved spotlight on the school’s mission and faithful witness.  Nearly 100 students from all over Greater Cleveland attend the faithful K-12 Catholic academy in Lakewood.

Earlier this week, the now nationally acclaimed Padre Pio Academy made the following announcement in its monthly newsletter, "The Gaudete."

We are celebrating a wonderful distinction: Padre Pio Academy has been named as a Newman Guide Recommended School by the Cardinal Newman Society, a well respected Catholic institution which carries forward the legacy and educational philosophy of St. John Henry Newman.

St. John Henry Newman was a professor, a Cardinal, and an educational philosopher whose motto was “Cor ad cor loquitur” (“Heart speaks to heart”). He believed that the best education was achieved by authentic formation in Christ and proper development of the intellect. In a world that was turning away from the Truth towards secularism, St. John Henry put forth a vision of education that prioritized the formation of the whole student - body, mind and soul - through the cultivation of their intellect in both matters of faith and reason.

His teachings sparked a change in Catholic education that is still lighting fires of love for Christ in the hearts’ of students today. In November of last year, Pope Leo XIV declared St. John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church and co-Patron of Catholic education, alongside St. Thomas Aquinas.

The Cardinal Newman Society continues St. John Henry Newman’s mission to promote and defend faithful Catholic education. They put forth five principles of faithful Catholic Identity in Education and recognize outstanding Catholic schools nationwide.

Across the country over 1,600 primary and secondary schools are working to implement the Cardinal Newman Society principles into their curricula. But Padre Pio Academy is one of only 44 schools that have been recognized by the Cardinal Newman Society as an exemplar of faithful Catholic education, fully dedicated to the mission of forming Christians to know and love God!

Padre Pio Academy is honored to be recognized and affirm the 5 Principles of Catholic Identity in Education.

The 5 Principles of Catholic Identity in Education

Catholic education...

  1. Is rooted in the divine, salvific mission of the Catholic Church.
  2. Models Christian communion and Catholic identity.
  3. Teaches students to encounter Christ in prayer, Scripture, and Sacrament.
  4. Integrally forms students as physical, intellectual, and spiritual beings called to perfect humanity in the fullness of Christ.
  5. Imparts a "Christian vision of the world, of life, of culture, and of history," ordering "the whole of human culture to the news of salvation."
